How to Measure for a Bay Window
Measuring a bay window can seem a little trickier, but it's easy once you know where to measure. The guide below will take you through each step, helping you measure accurately so your curtains fit perfectly. Take your time, measure carefully, and make a note of each section before placing your order.
Step 1: Identify your bay window type.
Bay windows come in different shapes, including three-sided and five-sided designs. Before you start measuring, identify the style of bay window you have so you know how many sections to measure.
Step 2: Decide how you'd like your curtains to hang.
Before taking any measurements, think about how you want to dress your bay window. You may prefer one curtain across the whole bay, a pair of curtains that meet in the middle, or individual curtains on each section of the bay. Deciding this first will help you measure the correct widths and keep a clear note of which measurement belongs to each curtain.
Step 3: Measure the width.
Measure the width of each section separately. For a three-sided bay, measure sections A, B and C. For a five-sided bay, measure A, B, C, D and E. Measure each section from one edge of the frame or trim to the other and write each measurement down.
If you're ordering individual curtains for each section, keep each measurement separate. If you're planning one curtain across the full bay or a pair of curtains, add the relevant section widths together to calculate the total width you need.
Step 4: Measure the drop.
Measure from the top of the window frame down to where you'd like your curtain to finish. If you're choosing floor-length curtains, measure to the floor. If you'd prefer a shorter curtain, measure to the windowsill or your chosen finished length. Measure each section individually if needed.
Step 5: Measure the depth.
If you're fitting your curtain inside the bay, measure from the front edge of the bay back to the window. This will help you choose suitable curtain hardware and make sure there's enough room for your curtains to hang neatly.
Step 6: Check your curtain pole or track.
Decide whether your curtain pole or track will be fitted inside the bay window or above it. If you're fitting it inside the bay, measure the available space on each section before ordering to make sure everything fits correctly.
